The Gir Jungle Trail is open from about 16 October to 15 June and shut for the four months of the monsoon. Within that season there are two good answers to “when should I go?”: December to March for pleasant weather and green-gold forest, and April and May for the most reliable lion sightings, if you can stand the heat.
The seasons in brief
- Post-monsoon (mid-October to November): the park reopens lush and green. Warm days, tall grass and thick foliage, so animals are harder to spot, but the forest is beautiful and Diwali brings the year’s biggest crowds.
- Winter (December to February): cool, dry and clear — cold on early drives, mild by day. The most comfortable time and the busiest, especially around Christmas and New Year. Best for birds, with winter migrants present.
- Spring (March): warming up, leaves falling, flame-of-the-forest in flower. Visibility improves and crowds thin: a fine compromise.
- Summer (April to mid-June): very hot, often above 40°C by afternoon. The teak is leafless, water is scarce and animals stay close to the remaining pools — the classic time for lion sightings. Kesar mangoes are in season.
- Monsoon (mid-June to mid-October): the Jungle Trail is closed. Tracks flood, and this is the breeding season. Devalia has usually stayed open for much of it, weather permitting.

This table is a general guide; conditions vary from year to year with the rains.
Which slot is best?
The first morning slot is the favourite: the forest is cool, the light is soft and lions are often still on the move or on a kill from the night. The afternoon slot comes a close second, especially in its last hour. The late-morning slot is the warmest and quietest, and usually the easiest to get a permit for — still well worth taking, particularly in winter when animals bask late.
When it is busiest
- Diwali week and the days after it, when all of Gujarat is on holiday.
- Christmas to New Year.
- Every weekend from November to February, and long weekends around public holidays.
For these dates, book the permit the moment the window opens on the official portal and reserve your room at the same time. Midweek visits are calmer and cheaper.
The weather for the sights around Gir
The same October-to-March window suits Somnath, Diu and Junagadh. The climb up Girnar is punishing in summer and should be started before dawn at any time of year. In the monsoon the coast is rough, the Somnath sound-and-light show is suspended and the countryside is at its greenest.
